Your Eye Health Is Connected To Your Overall Health

Regular eye exams are an important part of maintaining great eye health. But did you know that regular exams are also important for your overall health? Many chronic diseases that are common today can be detected through regular eye exams.

Diseases Often Detected During Eye Exams

Here are some of the health problems that can be detected through regularly scheduled eye exams:

  • High Cholesterol – High cholesterol is dangerous and can lead to problems such as strokes and heart disease.
  • High Blood Pressure – High blood pressure causes the pressure inside blood vessels to increase and vessels to thicken, which can be detected through eye examinations.
  • Diabetes – High blood sugar levels can also cause damage to blood vessels. We can see this as we look at the back of the eye, or the retina. Damaged blood vessels can leak fluid into the eye. This is often an early sign of type 2 diabetes.
  • Multiple Sclerosis – One of the symptoms of MS is optic neuritis or inflammation of the optic nerve. The American Optometric Association reports that 75% of people with MS experience optic neuritis. For 25% of those people, it can be the first symptom they experience.

There are many other systemic diseases that can be evident during an eye exam. And of course, there are other localized conditions such as eye cancer that are very important for us to catch early and help manage.
